Francis Grasso, the first modern DJ, the one who created the most important mixing techniques we have in our hands today, was also the one who started giving form to the music that would later be called disco, and we're talking about the late 60s. Back then, his sets were a mixture of soul, funk, rock, jazz, latin and african music, and the clubs were called "discotheques". The name "discotheque" was shortened to "disco", and it started being used in the early 70s to refer to the lovely musical mixture those lucky people used to listen and dance to inside those dark, dirty, racially and sexually mixed sweatboxes. Disco music was born.

Almost forty years later, this eclectic idea guides the minds of young heroes who, more than stepping back in time, aim at carrying on the passionate work of pioneers such as Grasso, David Mancuso, Nicky Siano, Larry Levan and so many others. I had the honor of talking to one of these new brave men, a British who, with his brother Rob Lee, is responsible for one of the most impressive nu disco acts of the moment, one of the people behind the awesome tribute for (another pioneer) Arthur Russell. Ladies and gentlemen, here's my chat with Faze Action's SIMON LEE about disco, Brazil, pandeiro, elephants and... even Paris Hilton!


Boogie Central: How was the gig celebrating the Arthur Russell compilation?
Simon Lee: It was a good one. They showed the beautifully put together documentry on Arthur Russell, "A Wild Combination", and then I Djed and Killer Whale and My Tiger My Timing played live.


BC: How did the project start?
SL: The album just came out on Electric Minds. They released "Wax The Van" first, and Dolan (Dolan Bergin, the man behind the label) approached us about doing the project and we said yes. We are happy with the way it came out. Andy Williams (from Yam Who?) is singing and I think the whole project was really nice, to put the new generation in touch with Arthur Russell's work.

BC: How's the pandeiro thing going?
SL: Er... Well, I like playing it but I'm not good and need to practice a lot more. What about you?

BC: I stopped it too! (laugh) (n.e.: we had a pandeiro class with the Brazilian king Don Pandeiro some months ago here in São Paulo)
SL: Don pandeiro is going to be really disappointed with us! (both laugh)

BC: Do you remember the first time you got in touch with Brazilian music?
SL: In the late 80s in London, probably, or maybe earlier. It was "Samba de Flora" by Flora Purim and Airto Moreira. I used to listen to American black music at Dingwalls, where Gilles Peterson was a resident, and he played it there.


BC: It's evident that the nu disco scene has been strong for some time in different parts of the world. Are you afraid that another big thing may come in the near future and take this sound away from the spotlights?
SL: I think it's gonna stay, because this time "disco" also refers to rock, house, not only disco. There are a lot of artists coming, in different ways, so I think it's quite healthy. When you say disco today there's a lot of variety involved, so it's a reason why I think it's not going to disappear.

BC: It's been almost 15 years since your first release. Was there a time when you thought Faze Action wouldn't be around for so long?
SL: After Nuphonic closed, it was a difficult moment, it was quite tough, a shame... But things don't last forever...

BC: And what was more important for you and Rob to get over Nuphonic's closing?
SL: We basically had to get our heads down and write some new music.

BC: Of course you and Rob have a lot of musical affinities, but where do you differ?
SL: Well, he's much more classical.... He's classicaly trained on the cello, and he might be more into AC/DC than I was (laughs)

BC: And being inside the nu disco scene, have you got new stories about celebrities and white horses?
SL: Not yet, I'm still waiting for the stories... Paris Hilton on an elephant would be good, walking through some club... (laughs)

BC: And what will follow your album?
SL: We've been working on new songs, we'll probably be releasing some new music in January or February. Some stuff will be more housey, some on Faze Action, some on other names, like Reflex, one of the names we use for our productions.

BC: And Brazil? Have you been in touch with people from here? Do you know when you'll come back?
SL: Tonight hopefully! (laughs) A guy from Cool Magazine, his name is Laurence, got in touch and wants us to produce podcasts for them, so we'll probably do it!

BC: Talking about podcasts, you're doing the Disco series for Juno Download website. Tell me more about it.
SL: We're doing the disco podcasts basically. We look on the website, on Juno Download's catalog, and there's quite a lot of healthy music on their catalog, sometimes old stuff, sometimes new stuff. And still about Brazil, we'd love to come there and play live!

BC: We're looking forward to your live act here, too! And how was it in Russia, Croacia, Fabric... All of them were live shows, right?
SL: Yes, they were all live. We are really pushing the live show, and the reaction has been great. We just got back from Russia and we had an amazing gig there, it was great to play live at Fabric on a Saturday night, the crowd and the reaction were great. Looking foward to doing more!

Na época, seus sets eram uma mistura de soul, funk, rock, jazz, música latina e africana, e os clubes eram chamados de "discothèques". O nome "discothèque" foi encurtado para "disco" e começou a ser usado no início dos anos 70 para definir a adorável mistura musical que aqueles sortudos costumavam ouvir e dançar dentro daqueles inferninhos escuros, safados, racialmente e sexualmente misturados. Assim nascia a disco music.

Quase quarenta anos depois, essa idéia eclética guia as mentes de jovens heróis que, mais do que voltar no tempo, querem continuar o trabalho apaixonado de pioneiros como Grasso, David Mancuso, Nicky Siano, Larry Levan e tantos outros. Tive a honra de conversar com um desses novos bravos homens, um inglês que, com seu irmão Rob Lee, é responsável por um dos mais impressionantes projetos de nu disco do momento, uma das pessoas por trás do incrível tributo a (outro pioneiro) Arthur Russell. Senhoras e senhores, aqui está minha conversa com metade do Faze Action, SIMON LEE, sobre disco, Brasil, pandeiro, elefantes e... até Paris Hilton!

Boogie Central: Como foi a festa comemorando a compilação de Arthur Russell?
Simon Lee: Foi muito boa. Eles exibiram o documentário sobre o Arthur Russell, "A Wild Combination", que foi muito bem montado, e então eu fiz um DJ set, e Killer Whale e My Tiger My Timing se apresentaram ao vivo.


BC: Como o projeto começou?
SL: O álbum acabou de sair pelo selo Electric Minds. Eles lançaram "Wax The Van" primeiro, e Dolan (Dolan Bergin, o homem por trás do selo) nos convidou para o projeto, e dissemos sim. Ficamos felizes com o resultado final. Andy Willilams (do Yam Who?) canta e eu acho que todo o projeto ficou muito bom, colocando a nova geração em contato com o trabalho de Arthur Russel.

BC: E o lance do pandeiro, como tá?
SL: Bom... Eu gosto de tocar, mas não sou muito bom e preciso praticar bem mais. E você?

BC: Eu parei também! (risos) (n.e.: tivemos uma aula com o rei brasileiro Don Pandeiro alguns meses atrás aqui em São Paulo)
SL: Don Pandeiro vai ficar bem chateado com a gente! (ambos riem)

BC: Você lembra da primeira vez em que entrou em contato com a música brasileira?
SL: Em Londres no fim dos anos 80, provavelmente, ou talvez antes. Foi "Samba de Flora" de Flora Purim e Airto Moreira. Eu costumava ouvir black music americana no Dingwalls, onde Gilles Peterson era residente, e ele tocou essa faixa lá.

BC: É evidente que a cena nu disco anda forte há um bom tempo em partes diferentes do mundo. Você tem medo que outra moda apareça num futuro próximo e tire esse som dos holofotes?
SL: Acho que vai ficar, porque dessa vez "disco" também se refere a rock, house, não apenas disco. Há vários artistas aparecendo, de formas diferentes, então acho que é bem saudável. Quando você fala em disco hoje há muita variedade envolvida, então é uma razão pela qual eu acho que não vai desaparecer.

BC: Já são quase 15 anos desde o seu primeiro release. Houve algum momento em que você achou que o Faze Action não duraria tanto?
SL: Depois que o (selo) Nuphonic fechou, foi um momento difícil, bem complicado, uma pena... Mas nada dura pra sempre...

BC: E o que foi mais importante para você e Rob conseguirem dar a volta por cima?
SL: A gente basicamente precisou abaixar a cabeça e escrever músicas novas.

BC: Claro que você e Rob têm várias afinidades musicas, mas onde vocês diferem?
SL: Bom, ele é bem mais clássico... Ele é treinado classicamente no cello, e ele provavelmente curte mais AC/DC do que eu! (risos)

BC: E estando dentro da cena nu disco, você já tem novas histórias sobre celebridades e cavalos brancos?
SL: Ainda não, ainda estou esperando as histórias... Paris Hilton em um elefante seria legal, entrando em um clube... (risos)

BC: E o que vem depois do álbum?
SL: Estamos trabalhando em novas músicas, provavelmente lançaremos algo em janeiro ou fevereiro. Alguma coisa mais housey, algumas como Faze Action, outras com outros nomes, como Reflex, um dos nomes que usamos para nossas produções.

BC: E o Brasil? Você está em contato com alguém daqui? Sabe quando volta?
SL: Hoje à noite, eu espero! (risos) Um cara da Cool Magazine, o nome dele é Laurence, entrou em contato com a gente e quer que façamos podcasts pra eles, então provavelmente vamos fazer.


BC: Falando em podcasts, vocês estão fazendo a série Disco para o site da Juno Download. Fale mais sobre isso.
SL: Estamos fazendo os podcasts de disco basicamente. A gente olha no website, no catálogo da Juno Download, e há bastante música saudável no catálogo deles, às vezes coisas novas, às vezes antigas. E ainda sobre o Brasil, adoraríamos chegar aí para tocar ao vivo!

BC: Nós também adoraríamos! E como foi na Rússia, Croácia, no Fabric... Todos foram lives, certo?
SL: Sim, todos foram shows ao vivo. Estamos realmente investindo no show ao vivo, e a reação tem sido ótima. Acabamos de voltar da Rússia e tivemos uma gig incrível lá, foi ótimo tocar ao vivo no Fabric em um sábado à noite, o público e a reação foram ótimos. Estou ansioso para fazer isso mais!

Solid Bump's new single + the new blog house? (English/Português)

"We Don't Know" - video


Through one of our constant musical exchanges, my friend Camilo Rocha showed me a track he had found in a blog. With samples of Sylvia Striplin's "Give Me Your Love", it touched me right away and, since then, American Solid Bump Records became one of my favorite new labels (download and read more about the track here).

I found out that Laberge, the brain behind "Gimmie Your Love", is a 22-year-old young Canadian who's been the apple of the eye of Solid Bump's A&R and producers Eric Kozak and Clayton Meador, aka White Girl Lust. After some tracks on compilations, the first full EP by Laberge has just seen the light of online retailers like Juno, Beatport and iTunes, with 4 tracks that may not be revolutionary, but can touch any funky heart.

"True Love" stands out, with its sampled vocals a la Stephanie Mills speeded up to a child tone. "We Don't Know" saves vocals, "Just Don't Let Go" has none, and not much can be said to distinguish their instrumentals, as they all follow the lessons of French touch pioneers of the 90s: disco samples, filters and that's it. Nevertheless, it won't be difficult to find the right time for all of them in your set.

Remixwise, Meroz (of Beatism Records) gives a tougher touch in "True Love", as well as DJ EQ in his remake of "Just Don't Let Go", which is not on the release but you can download for free here.

By the way, this strategy of sending promos for bloggers is wicked because it's not only an effective promotion tool (remember that if it weren't for a blog, this blog probably wouldn't be talking about this release), but it also changes the face of the so-called "blog house", taking it beyond the jackhammer maximal stuff usually labeled like this. Besides, am I the only one who thinks labeling a sound just for the place it's available at is not very sagacious?

Em um de nossos constantes intercâmbios musicais, meu amigo Camilo Rocha me mostrou uma faixa que ele achou em um blog. Com samples de "Give Me Your Love" (Sylvia Striplin), me pegou de imediato e, desde então, o americano Solid Bump Records se tornou um dos meus novos selos favoritos. Descobri que Laberge, o cérebro por trás de "Gimmie Your Love", é um jovem canadense de 22 anos, menino dos olhos dos produtores e donos do Solid Bump, Eric Kozak e Clayton Meador, aka White Girl Lust. "True Love" se destaca, com seus vocais a la Stephanie Mills sampleados e acelerados até alcançar um tom infantil. "We Don't Know" economiza nos vocais, "Just Don't Let Go" praticamente não tem nenhum, e pouco pode ser dito para distinguir seus instrumentais, já que eles seguem as lições dos pioneiros do French touch dos anos 90: samples disco, filtros e pronto. No entanto, não será difícil encontrar o melhor momento para qualquer uma das três no seu set.

Falando de remixes, Meroz (do Beatism Records) dá um toque mais pesadinho a "True Love", assim como o DJ EQ em seu remake de "Just Don't Let Go", que não está no release mas você pode baixar de graça aqui.

Aliás, essa estratégia de mandar promos aos bloggers é demais porque não apenas se mostra como uma eficiente ferramenta de promoção (lembre que se não fosse um blog, este blog provavelmente não estaria falando sobre esse release), mas também muda a cara da tal "blog house", levando esse som além do maximal-britadeira geralmente rotulado dessa forma. E falando nisso, sou eu o único que acha não muito sagaz rotular um som simplesmente pelo lugar onde ele está disponível?

Thirty years ago, a 12 inch changed the world of music. "Rapper's Delight", a 15-minute song by Sugarhill Gang, was not the first hip hop song put on vinyl as a lot of people believe (it was Fatback Band's "King Tim III"). Nevertheless, it was definitely the record which made hip hop big, kicking off the career of many kids who had never thought they could make it before. Based on another classic - Chic's "Good Times" (the instrumental was replayed by another band, Positive Force, and, at least officially, samples of Chic's song were not used) - it's all about three guys rapping incessantly about parties, cars, ladies, hotels, motels. It was all about fun. Not everyone was happy, though.

Sylvia Robinson was a label owner who called three guys with no professional connection with the world of hip hop - Big Bank Hank, Wonder Mike and Master Gee - to record the track. Those who had been in it since the beginning got pissed off - how come three "nobodies" are selling thousands of records? Some even say it was the day that hip hop died, and that "Rapper's Delight" didn't have any of the main characteristics of the called real hip hop - "no DJ to rhyme over, no rivalry or competition with other crews, and no prospect of concert play or crowds to entertain. (...) They moved Hip Hop from the street to the mainstream, from the live to the studio-generated, from the crowd-centric to the rapper-centric, and from the active to the passive." (entry of Urban Dictionary). It's also said that one of the members of Sugarhill Gang stole verses from one of the rappers of the Cold Crush Brothers for the track, and this guy didn't get any money or credits.

The thing is: right or wrong, good or bad, if it weren't for "Rapper's Delight" maybe we wouldn't have a lot of what we have today in the DJ culture, musically and technically speaking. Second: if the guys who had been struggling before felt they deserved this opportunity, they should have thought commercially about it before and tried to put their work on wax, but none of them believed it would work, at least before the record had been released. By the way, most of them had their piece of the cake later, and as Grandmaster Flash properly spoke on Bill Brewster and Frank Broughton's "Last Night A DJ Saved My Life" book: "I was like... 'Damn, I could'a been the first.' I didn't know the gun was loaded like that. Blew up. It was a huge record for them. (...) It was OK, though. 'Cos we were gonna come later... We had the talent, and they didn't". Does anybody dare to disagree?

Trinta anos atrás, um 12 polegadas mudou o mundo da música. "Rapper's Delight", uma música de 15 minutos do Sugarhill Gang, não foi a primeira faixa do hip hop em vinil como muitos acreditam (o posto é de "King Tim III", do Fatback Band). No entanto, foi definitivamente o disco que fez o hip hop crescer, o trampolim para o sucesso de muitos garotos que nunca acharam que conseguiriam antes. Baseada em outro clássico - "Good Times", do Chic (o instrumental foi tocado de novo por outra banda, Positive Force, e, pelo menos oficialmente, nenhum sample da original foi usado) - consiste em três caras tagarelando sem parar (no Brasil saiu com o apelido "Melô do Tagarela", veja a foto) sobre festas, carros, mulheres, hotéis, motéis. Pura diversão. Nem todo mundo estava feliz, no entanto.

Sylvia Robinson era uma dona de selo que chamou três caras sem ligação profissional com o mundo do hip hop - Big Bank Hank, Wonder Mike and Master Gee - para gravar a faixa. Quem estava na cena desde o começo de tudo ficou puto - como três fanfarrões estão vendendo milhares de discos? Alguns ainda dizem que foi o dia em que o hip hop morreu, e que "Rapper's Delight" sequer tinha alguma das principais características do chamado verdadeiro hip hop - "nenhum DJ fazendo a base para as rimas, nem rivalidade ou competição com outros grupos, nem perspectiva de shows ou platéias para entreter. (...) Levaram o hip hop das ruas pro mainstream, do palco pro estúdio, do centrado no público pro centrado no rapper, do ativo pro passivo" (verbete do Urban Dictionary). Dizem também que um dos membros do Sugarhill Gang roubou versos de um dos rappers do Cold Crush Brothers para a faixa, e que o cara não ganhou nem grana nem créditos.

A questão é: certa ou errada, boa ou ruim, não fosse "Rapper's Delight" e talvez não tivéssemos muito do que temos hoje na cultura do DJ, musicalmente ou tecnicamente. Segundo: se os caras que estavam lutando antes achassem que eles mereciam a oportunidade, deveriam ter pensado comercialmente antes e tentado lançar em vinil, mas nenhum acreditou que isso poderia dar certo, pelo menos até esse disco ter sido lançado. Aliás, a maioria deles teve sua fatia do bolo mais tarde, e como sabiamente disse Grandmaster Flash no livro "Last Night A DJ Saved My Life" de Bill Brewster and Frank Broughton: "Fiquei tipo... 'Droga, eu poderia ter sido o primeiro.' Não sabia que a arma estava carregada assim. Estourou. Foi um enorme sucesso pra eles (...) Tudo bem, porque a gente viria depois... A gente tinha talento, eles não". Alguém se atreve a discordar?

Sharon Redd rare 1971 interview + other videos

After some time without posting, I'm back with an astonishing video from 1971: Sharon Redd, one of the best disco singers ever who sadly passed away in 1992, on an interview for GTK, a TV show produced and broadcast by ABC (Australian Broadcasting Company). Sharon is leaving the famous musical Hair and explains why and what are her plans for the future. Relaxed and modest, she complains about all the crap in the music business and says that although she didn't want to be a top singer, she loved what she did.

Depois de um tempo sem postar, estou de volta com um vídeo surpreendente de 1971: Sharon Redd, uma das maiores cantoras da disco que infelizmente faleceu em 1992, em uma entrevista para o GTK, um programa de TV produzido e exibido pela ABC (Australian Broadcasting Company). Sharon está deixando o famoso musical Hair e explica por quê, e também fala sobre seus planos para o futuro. Relaxada e humilde, reclama de todo o lixo que existe no mercado musical e diz que embora não estivesse buscando sucesso mundial, ela amava o que fazia.

Thrilling synths on a blend of italo disco and house, with samples masterly used from The Creatures's "Believe In Yourself" 1983 song.

Acid House Documentary coming soon! (English/português)

Acid House fans, it's time to jack again: "They Call It Acid - The story of 'Acid House' culture" is a documentary about to be released, directed by Gordon Manson, narrated by Robert Owens and with soundtrack compiled by "Evil" Eddie Richards. From the birth of acid house culture in UK in 1988 with roots in Chicago and Detroit to the government attack, its spread worldwide with superclubs, outdoor raves and DJs of the era becoming superstars, it seems that the whole story will be there.

The official release says: "Far from being just a culture of music, fashion and drugs, 'Acid House' broke down long lasting barriers in the UK, bringing together black and white, rich and poor and groups of previously opposing football hooligans."

The film also features interviews with Adamski, Alfredo, Carl Cox, Colin Faver, A Guy Called Gerald, Larry Heard, Marshall Jefferson, Derrick May, Paul Oakenfold, Robert Owens, Danny Rampling, Evil Eddie Richards, Jesse Saunders, Pete Tong and many others, as well as footage from first illegal clubs and parties and of police raids.

Americans Steven Hawley and Sage Schwarm are the headmen of a new project which has been delivering some happy and wonderful disco, boogie and electrofunk lately - Codebreaker. Their discography includes a cover version of Jimmy Ross's classic "First True Love Affair" (1981) and a track with the sweet and talented vocalist Kathy Diamond, who has worked with Aeroplane and Maurice Fulton.

The guys are planning a tour in North America and Europe with two more musicians - yeah, an authentic disco band. Brazilian promoters, stay tuned!

If you haven't heard about Dave Pezzner yet, you probably know his project Jacob London - with Bob Hansen, he has been making funky and fun(ny) house music for 16 years.

Last year, the American producer based in Seattle started his solo career and didn't need much time to be recognized as more than a great promise. Now taking his sound towards a more serious direction, he has released some remixes and 4 EPs of sweet, deep, sensitive and melodic, yet percussive and groovy house tracks.

You're definitely going to hear a lot more about Pezzner and his forthcoming releases such as "Logan EP" (Urban Torque Music) and remixes for Josh Wink, Mark Farina and Mike Monday.

Greg plays twice in Brazil on May 2nd (Saturday): first at Sesc Paulista, 10 PM, with DJ Tahira, then at Vegas (Discology), with Camilo Rocha and Claudia Assef.

As I promised, here's the interview with White Girl Lust. They are from San Francisco and responsible for Solid Bump Records, a new label for which I have a lot of respect and admiration. Thank you guys for the time and attention!


1) Boogie Central: Solid Bump releases have lots of filters and disco loops, and there are other artists nowadays, such as Sound Stream and Pitto, whose music also has this characteristic. Do you agree that it might be a sign that the French touch is coming back?

Eric: We definitely see it coming back in a big way. We've seen straight up classic disco blowing up in a huge way over the past 2 years and as interest in this peaks I feel it is inevitable that it will cause interest in disco house. Two artist we work with are very dedicated to this sound – Laberge and Mykill - both of which will have EPs out in early summer. When I DJ their tracks out, younger kids who missed a lot of the first wave of this sound are always are really responsive.

Solid Bump is a funky label. This is a funky sound so we are all about pushing it. That being said - as long as its funky - we are not married to just disco house. To us a good tune is not just having a disco sample filtered. To us it has to have a groove and that could be all synths, pots and pans, whatever. The new White Girl Lust EP (dropping in mid-June) explores the groove with both disco funk samples as well as sample free funky electro/techno.


2) BC: How was your relationship with the French touch back in the 90s/early 00s?

E: During that period we were only listeners. Eric (WGL) was a professional drum 'n bass DJ/ producer and played the rave circuit when the sound broke big so he was exposed to the progressions every week by other DJs who were pushing it. Being that this was America though, the Chicago DJs were really the people that were playing tracks that worked disco and funk influences. People like Derrick Carter and Roy Davis Jr. To be honest, DJs like San Francisco's Wicked Crew were probably the biggest influence on our house taste. I first heard Garth when I was 16 and went mad for it. He would play a mish mash of genres from old disco to (at that time) current house and get deep with it. So I guess really our main influences are not as tailored as they may seem!

The French disco house thing also inspired a lot of great drum 'n bass tracks that Eric played often. Artist like J Majik, High Contrast, and the Hospital label all made tracks that clearly were influenced by the French.

Here is a mix from last spring that they did for Discobelle. As Eric says, "it starts a bit more 'feel good in the summer' then goes clubby." Enjoy it!

O Solid Bump é um selo funky. É um som funky, e nosso objetivo é fomenta-lo. Dito isso - contanto que seja funky - não somos casados apenas com a disco house. Para nós, uma boa faixa não precisa necessariamente ter um sample disco. Para nós precisa ter groove e podem ser apenas synths, pots e pans [técnica de produção que consiste em alternar sons nos canais], qualquer coisa. O novo EP do White Girl Lust (que será lançado no meio de junho) explora o groove tanto em samples disco-funk quanto funky electro/techno sem samples.

2) BC: Como era a ligação de vocês com o French touch no fim dos anos 90/início dos 00?

E: Nesse período nós éramos apenas ouvintes. Eric (WGL) era produtor e DJ de drum 'n bass e tocava no circuito raver quando essa sonoridade estourou, então teve contato com a progressão dele toda semana com outros DJs que tocavam esse som. No entanto, levando em consideração que estamos nos EUA, os DJs de Chicago eram os que realmente tocavam faixavas que trabalhavam as influências disco e funk. Pessoas como Derrick Carter e Roy Davis Jr. Para ser honesto, DJs como Wicked Crew (São Francisco) eram provavelmente a maior influência no nosso lado house. Eu (Eric) ouvi Garth quando tinha 16 anos e fiquei louco. Ele tocava uma mistura louca de gêneros de disco antiga ao house da época e ia fundo nisso. Então realmente acredito que nossas principais influências não são tão costuradas quanto parecem!

O lance da disco house francesa também inspirou várias ótimas faixas de drum 'n bass que Eric costumava tocar. Artistas como J Majik, High Contrast e o selo Hospital fizeram faixas claramente influenciadas pelos franceses.

If there's still any doubt about the french touch's comeback, I believe it'll be cleared after you listen to what the guys of Sound Stream have been doing. Go to their myspace page and listen to their music scrolling down to their Beatport player. The design of their page also denounces what their main influences are.

Now Boogie Central's time machine takes you back to 1998, when the famous french duo Cassius released the single "Casius 1999". The remix, which is what really matters, is based on samples taken from Donna Summer's "(If It) Hurts Just A Little", from the underrated album "Donna Summer" (1982), produced by Quincy Jones and released in 1982.

Slower, funkier and, doing justice to the title, sexier than the recent "Feelin' ", "Sexvibe" means ten minutes of extremely mesmerizing groove, insistent vocals and some acoustic instruments looped in the middle. Released on Arearemote last year, it may not be 100% french house, but has enough filters and disco feeling to make you imagine some hot, dirty and sexy nights in the past.

And talking about the past, listen to "Palm Beat", released in 2002 by Le Knight Club, side project of Daft Punk's Guy Manuel de Homem-Christo with Eric Chedeville. These guys, by the way, were the founders of Crydamoure label, which is probably the greatest provider of filtered house ever. No wonder this label is being mentioned here again.

"Palm Beat" is based on samples of an obscure 1978 gem called "Don't Hold Back", by Chanson (Ariola Records).

Lançada ano passado pelo Arearemote, pode não ser 100% french house, mas tem filtros e pegada disco suficientes pra fazerem você imaginar alguma noite quente, safada e sexy do passado.

E falando no passado, ouça "Palm Beat", lançada em 2002 pelo Le Knight Club, projeto paralelo do Daft Punk Guy Manuel de Homem-Christo ao lado de Eric Chedeville. Aliás, esses caras foram os fundadores do selo Crydamoure, que é provavelmente o principal provedor de filtered house de todos os tempos. Não assusta que o selo seja mencionado aqui novamente.

French House is back! (Part 1)

Some recent releases have made some people believe that French house, full of filters and disco samples, is back. I not only believe it but also love it. It's really likely to happen, if you think about the relevance disco has gained during the last two years and that people seem to be tired of the 80's and looking back to the 90's. Thus, the next posts are going to be about French house, the new and the old.

One of the young producers responsible for this comeback is Dutchman Pitto, who, after Idjut Boys's incredible trippy disco rework (listen to it below), has also used Phil Collins's obscure and beautiful song "I'm Not Moving" on his recently released single "Feelin'", on Joris Voorn's Rejected Music imprint. Pretty techy and a bit dubby, it's true, but the filters and the disco feeling (although Phil's original, which you can listen to below, is not disco) are there. The result is brilliant, to say the least.

And going back to 2000, Play Paul's release on the superb Crydamoure label called "Spaced Out", with samples of Valerie Dore's italo classic "Get Closer" (1984).

É bem provável, se você pensar na relevância que a disco ganhou nos últimos dois anos e que as pessoas parecem cansadas dos anos 80 e voltando aos 90. Logo, os próximos posts serão sobre a house francesa, a velha e a nova.

Um dos jovens produtores responsáveis por essa volta é o holandês Pitto, que, depois da absurda versão disco-viajandona do Idjut Boys (ouça abaixo), também usou a linda e obscura "I'm Not Moving", do Phil Collins, no seu recente single "Feelin'" pelo selo Rejected Music (do Joris Voorn). Bem techy e com influências dub, é verdade, mas os filtros e a pegada disco (embora a original do Phil, que você pode ouvir abaixo, não seja disco) estão lá. O resultado é, no mínimo, brilhante.

E voltando ao ano 2000, o single do Play Paul pelo fabuloso selo Crydamoure chamado "Spaced Out", com samples do clássico italo de Valerie Dore "Get Closer" (1984).

Morgan Geist with new single

Morgan Geist has just released the second single from his full-length album Double Night Time, the digital-only EP "The Shore". The guest for the remixes this time is Paul Woolford (aka Bobby Peru), who gives the original single a tech-house approach

"The Shore" is the follow-up of "Detroit" and its jaw-dropping Carl Craig remix.

Nu-disco nights in São Paulo

Next Saturday, April 11th, Brazilian disco boys Victor A and Pedro Zopelar are going to celebrate the debut of their project and their first release, the two-track mp3 single "Aire". The tracks are available for listening on their Myspace and will soon be sold on Juno Donwload.

Mandré - Solar Flight (1977)

Depois de fazer parte do grupo de soul Maxayan, Andre Lewis assinou com a Motown para uma carreira solo. Adotou o alter ego "Mandré" e visual e som futurísticos - agora o "homem misterioso de outro planeta", o artista sempre aparecia com um capacete em shows e nas capas do discos e por essa razão é hoje considerado um dos precursores do Daft Punk.

Seu primeiro álbum foi lançado pela Motown em 1977 e traz a inacreditável "Solar Flight", um dos maiores clássicos do Loft, de David Mancuso. 8 minutos instrumentais de space disco/funk que chegam a lembrar os brasileiros do Azymuth, talvez uma das influências do som de Mandré.

De acordo com sua biografia no Discogs.com, ele foi um dos primeiros músicos a gravar com a TR-808 da Roland, além de ter trabalhado com Frank Zappa, Earth Wind and Fire e Hot Chocolate, entre outros.

Hoje em dia, Mandré canta música Gospel todo domingo em uma igreja dos Estados Unidos.

Adopted the alter ego "Mandré" and futuristic sound and visual - now the "mystery man from outer space", the artist always appeared with a helmet (in his albums and concerts). For this reason, he's considered one of the precursors of Daft Punk.

His first album was relesead on Motown in 1977, and brings the unbelievably wonderful "Solar Flight", one of the biggest classics at David Mancuso's Loft. 8 instrumental minutes of space disco/funk which remind Brazilian group Azymuth, a possible influence in Mandré's music.

According to his biography on Discogs.com, he was one of the first musicians to record with Roland's TR-808, besides having worked with Frank Zappa, Earth Wind and Fire, LaBelle and Hot Chocolate, to name a few.

Nowadays, Andre sings Gospel music every Sunday at an American church.
